Wedding Dance Music and What to Expect

What's Traditionally Worked Well?

It’s that time of year when wedding season is in full swing.  You’re curating the perfect playlist for you and your guests and then suddenly realize….  Your music only has the hits from your high school days!  Or worse yet, you still don’t know where to start.  Let’s take a step back first to see what to expect and look at what’s worked well.

Most wedding receptions allot 3 hours for dancing.  If you’re looking to have some “oldies” covered, a good rule of thumb is to have 15-30 minutes at the start of the open dance floor dedicated to those songs.  From there your DJ will progress to a more modern vibe as they read the crowd.  Working with your DJ ahead of time will allow them to understand your preferences and what “oldies” are to you and if it would be better to use remixes of them for later.

The Rise of Remixes and Edits

We’ve heard from wedding couples how tired they are of hearing the same line dance songs at every wedding.  At CLIK, our DJs utilize remixes to keep older songs sounding fresh and exciting to keep everyone from your grandparents to your younger cousins on the dance floor.

But what if you wanted to keep the traditional songs as they were?  That’s where the edits come in.  These ‘edits’ can stay true to the original song like a ‘remaster’ but can  can incorporate a modern touch.  Here are a few examples:

Music Planning and Your Music Preferences

Your DJ is going to have a wealth of knowledge and experience from past weddings.  To utilize them best in the planning phase, share what music you and your family are into.  From there, put about 5-15 songs you absolutely want to hear on the dance floor in a must play list and the rest in a ‘suggested’ or ‘play if possible’ list in your music planner.

Having the conversation on what you’re looking for while also showing the songs you’re into will give your DJ insight on how to best keep the dance floor busy.

Final Thoughts

We all have different music tastes but one thing is for sure, and that is that we all want to have a packed dance floor!  Work with your Wedding DJ and share your music preferences so they can help you curate a night that everyone will remember.
